Anyone who's ever been to the Annual Village Halloween Parade knows that the flock of giant puppets dancing above the crowds on Sixth Avenue is one of its most memorable sights. This year, for the first time, families will have a chance to work with the same artists who produce those spooky creations as part of Morningside Lights, a series of free art classes culminating in a twilight procession on Saturday, September 29. Here are some ways to make the most out of the inaugural art happening. Make illuminated art Stop by Miller Theatre all week for free, drop-in art workshops led by Alex Kahn and Sophia Michahelles (Sat Sept 22, Sun Sept 23 noon-6pm; Mon Sept 24-Fri Sept 28 2-8pm). Guided by the theme of this year's procession, The Imagined City, the artists teach families basic lantern-making techniques, like bamboo-forming, dcoupage and paper casting. Everyone will contribute ideas of what might belong in their cityscape (skyscrapers and taxicabs, anyone?), and the artists will design the final sculptures using these figments of collective imagination. Some lanterns will be several feet wide and will require a whole family to carry them. Learn about urban space As they work on their lanterns, older kids may enjoy learning about utopian visions of urban space as well as the legacy of urban planning in one of the city's most diverse neighborhoods: the intersection of Morningside Heights, Harlem and the Upper West Side. Through its shared act of creation and public performance, Morningside Lights aims to celebrate the revitalization of this uptown crossroads. Create some noise Musicians of all ages and abilities are invited to contribute to the procession's soundscape, which will be arranged by composer Nathan Davis. Budding Beethovens can make an instrument or embed a bell in their sculpture during one of the drop-in workshops; they'll gather to rehearse their music an hour before the procession. New Yorkers can also record their favorite city sounds (think subway trains, birds chirping in Central Park, honking taxis) and submit them to Davis; he'll incorporate them into the score, which will be broadcast on handheld radios during the procession.

MOCA's dynamic building at the Uptown area of University Circle is the perfect setting for some offbeat new art classes and events for adults. (Chuck Crow, The Plain Dealer) Dodgeball in the museum? Dancing near the installations? Turning your fear of insects into art? Since their move to University Circle in the spring of 2012, MOCA has instituted a series of non-traditional programs to lure visitors to the museum by breaking through their fear of contemporary art. MOCA programs The Intrepreters: Third Thursday of the month from 6:30 – 8 p.m. $20 for MOCA Members; $30 for non-members. Individual Classes: $8 for MOCA Members; $10 for non-members .Ticket price includes materials and one complimentary beverage. One Hour/One Work: Second Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. Free with gallery admission; reservation recommended. Phobic Drawing Class: 7 to 10 p.m. January 24. This spin on the traditional museum drawing class invites participants to capitalize on phobias to generate original works of art. Inducing conditions like acrophobia (heights), claustrophobia (confined spaces), and entomophobia (insects) will be integrated into the creative process. Go With Me! 7 p.m. February 7. The second-annual elementary-school themed event takes participants” back to a time when meeting new people was as easy as writing a note or standing next to them in gym class.” Fan favorites from last year including Dodgeball, Parachute, and Musical Chairs. Call 216-421-8671 or mocacleveland.org to register for any event. MOCA is at 11400 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. These include the Go With Me "elementary-school inspired mingling" – hence the dodgeball - the Phobic Drawing Class, and One Work/One Hour, in which a group contemplates one piece of art together for yes, one hour. "In reality, contemporary art is a lot of different things, " says Megan Reich, MOCA's director of programs. "You can't box it into categories, but certainly there is an uncertainty with people as to what they're going to see. It can be mysterious." These new adult outreach programs include The Interpreters, a Third Thursday series that begins this Thursday, Nov. 21. Like the other programs, it seeks to demystify both the museum and the concept of contemporary art. "It's an opportunity to break down preconceptions and have fun with art, to approach the work in a way that is about a more social experience, " says Reich

This week in East London, Will Kennard (aka Status from Chase and Status launched Taster Courses for East London Arts & Music (ELAM) – a new free school for 16-19 year olds wanting to break into the music industry. The courses ran over three days (there will be more in November!) and gave attendees the chance to see what ELAM plans to offer students when it opens next September. Hint: it’s pretty exciting. “I left the sessions really buzzing, ” said Ed Butcher, co-founder of ELAM, when he chatted to us about the day’s events. “The kids got to experience some performance; they were singing with Lloyd Wade [the x-factor vocal coach], and jumped into a production session where we recorded vocals. They played with them, auto tuned them, reverbed them, things like that, puts some beats and bass, “They said the business session was their favourite part, which means they can see that there are jobs and interests in music outside of just being a performer – or being a producer, as important as they are. It was great.”It’s taken two years for ELAM to get its free school status, which will mean it doesn’t cost a penny for students. It’s also gained the support of high profile organisations, record labels and production houses from within the music industry community. The team is currently working with Plan B’s Each One Teach One programme as part of the University of Alternative Learning, and ELAM is supported by Mistajam and SBTV’s Jamal Edwards. ELAM is a world-class academy in the making, an idea inspired by the impressive talent of the students Will ‘Status’ Kennard taught during his time at North Trafford College. “I taught Music Technology for two years to kids from some of the poorest parts of the city and, at the time, was also trying to make it myself as a musician and a producer. I really took the job to make ends meet, but I was inspired by the kids – they were incredibly talented, way more talented than my 25 year old self’. It was their lack of opportunity and ability to utilise the skills they inspired ELAM. ‘After my own career started I stayed in touch with these kids to help them out, give them advice, ” said Will. ”It was just really sad that none of them went any further or reached their potential the way I felt they should.” So with a strong team of teachers and experts ELAM set out to create an opportunity that hasn’t been seen before. ELAM prides itself on four core values: collaboration, innovation, excellence and integrity, along with an aptitude for music and the industry. The college will offer a range of subjects such as Music Technology, Music Performance and Music Business, however a broader education for the students also take precedence as courses in literacy and numeracy are also part of the prospectus. ELAM’s aim is to offer students a well-rounded education which will equate to 3 A-levels that can progress them into higher education or employment, whether it be directly in the music industry or not. With little under a year until ELAM opens its doors for the first time and with the first taster session of the day coming to a successful end, there was an air of enthusiasm and accomplishment as Will shared his excitement for the future.

This summer, the natural world will make its mark on art. Using fossils, plants, wax, crystals, sand, mud, and more, participants will collaborate with artist Leah Wolff to explore the ways in which organic substances and natural objects can be updated and utilized as the raw materials for a complex and sophisticated series of artworks. Sound Amplification Available Under the Spell of Mysterious Forces Magic, Illusion, and Performance-Based Art What happens when a performer undergoes an intense emotional and physical transformation and becomes someone completely different than who they used to be? How is the act of creating an artwork similar to that of pulling off a difficult illusion or fooling an audience with a well-crafted magic trick? Artist Alan Calpe will take participants through the strange, mysterious, and sometimes disturbing world of performance-based art, with detours through the realms of photography, video, and other types of two-dimensional art. CLICK@MoMA July 8–August 14, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 2:00–5:00 p.m. Babycastles Arcade—The Return! They’re baaaack! Following up on their immensely popular 2011 workshop, the mad scientists and gaming geniuses from Babycastles will return to The Museum of Modern Art, and this time, it’s personal. Participants will work alongside this creative collective to explore the world of independent video games, merging the worlds of modern art and cutting-edge digital design to find new modes of interaction and interface, and collaborate with a community of likeminded peers to create a fully functional video game arcade. Sculpture Boot Camp An Intro to Making Everything…and More This summer, MoMA’s sculpture boot camp offers everything a young recruit will need to survive the world of three-dimensional art. Participants in this workshop will explore the creative techniques used by contemporary sculptors and learn the basics of a variety of processes, and then use those skills to create their own artistic masterpieces. Working under the guidance of sculptor Keith Mendak, studio members will gain hands-on experience in mold making, welding, papier mch, and more.
