Free Art workshops San Francisco

This week, registration opened for the Richmond District Neighborhood Center’s Multicultural Arts Program. Every weekend, kids age 5-12 can take free art workshops taught by leading Bay Area artists, where they’ll learn traditional and contemporary art forms from around the world.

This fall’s workshops include:

Family “Fun With Photography” Scavenger Hunts
9/11, 10/9, 11/13, 12/11 at 1pm
Enjoy afternoons with your family, exploring and photographing different areas of the Richmond District and Presidio. Budding shutterbugs will explore different ways to photograph objects and learn how these techniques can be used to express themselves visually. Last year’s summer workshop produced a self-published book. First class begins September 11. full info

September with Casey Davidge
9/17, 9/18, 9/24: 1-3pm
Casey Davidge is a Chicago-based artist who is interested in exploring the human psychological divide between internal, static, idealized visions of reality and the external, shifting, imperfect reality of the physical world. Join her for a series of three workshops that explore using natural materials (“Nature’s Palette”), the self-portrait (“What’s Your Story?”) and creating miniature worlds (“Miniature Woodland Worlds”). full info

October with Jamie Chan and Blas Herrera
10/2: 1-3pm, 10/8: 10am-12noon, 10/16: 1-3pm, 10/22: 10am-12noon
Jamie Chan and Blas Herrera are a husband and wife team with a passion for seeking creativity in people and enjoy sharing their love of fiber and handcrafts; they also run Urban Fauna Studio. Their workshops explore the decorative art of Mosaics (“Paint Chip Mosaics”), how to make a yarn bowl (“Scrap Yarn Bowls”), turning tissue paper into colorful works of art (“Tissue Paper Tie Dye”), and crafting Halloween ornaments from needle felt wool (“Needle Felted Pumpkins”). full info

Work with Michele to craft art from natural materials. Delve into the Native American Indian tradition of totem pole making (“Totem Poles”), try your hand at Tibetan Sand Painting (“Sand Art”), and create mosaics that date back to Greek and Roman times (“Seed Mosaics”). full info

Gage Opdenbrouw paints primarily in oil, and the vast majority of his works involve the figure or the landscape in one way or another. Gage’s workshops will teach participants how to paint a variety of subjects including outdoor landscapes (“Starry Nights and Shining Seas”), animals in their natural habitat (“Tropical Birds”), and fauna (“Cherry Blossoms”). full info
