For more than twenty years, Art New England has offered unique, in-depth workshops in a variety of disciplines in an inspirational setting. Art New England is designed to refresh and expand personal artistic practice. Away from day-to-day demands, the classes, instructors, scenery, food, access to studios and program staff are all there to allow you to focus on one thing: your art work.
Located at Bennington College, long-known as a center for artistic innovation and excellence, Art New England is built on the understanding that time and focus for creative work are extraordinarily precious commodities.. We strive to ensure that each class offers an intensive, specialized focus. Instructors are chosen both for the excellence of their work as well as their ability to work with students, and the day is structured to allow people to work as intensively as they choose.
This year we are delighted to welcome back many faculty who have helped make Art New England one of the best summer residency programs in the country And we are also delighted to welcome new faculty who bring new classes and will continue to build our reputation.
Courses and Extended Stay
Courses are intense and focused around making work. The schedule is: a first meeting, Sunday night (from 7pm-9:30pm), classes follow, Monday-Friday 9am-4pm and Saturday, 9am-noon, studios are open 24 hours. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights faculty present lectures about their work. There is open life drawing for all available Monday-Thursday nights. Participants take one class per week, and receive a discounted rate for taking two or three (see registration information for discounts and prices).
The Extended Stay option is for participants who want to take advantage of the Art New England environment for a week before or after their workshop without being enrolled in a class. Students receive accommodations (room and meals) plus studio space, allowing them to continue work they have begun the previous week or begin working a week before their workshop starts. It is also a great time to explore the many extraordinary museums located near Bennington, such as the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MOCA) in North Adams, MA and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA. The extended stay is on a space available basis and your space will be confirmed in June.
