Mike believes that a firm foundation in traditional skills makes for good quality artwork, no matter how abstracted the final piece may be! In the winter conventional drawing and painting techniques are the basis of each term's work. Sessions are split into an introductory demonstration or talk on the theme of the day, followed by time for student artists to put the ideas into practice in their own work. Personal one-to-one tuition is included in the second phase of each session. Occasionally students can let their hair down with fun abstract work : a case of tutor lighting artistic touch paper, and then retiring to a safe distance !!

In the summer term the classes concentrate on outdoor sketching, getting out and about as much as possible into the beautiful Devonshire countryside. When trapped indoors by adverse weather, students work on developing skills which will be helpful in the field.

Artists of all aptitudes and levels of achievement are welcome on the courses. Mike is very happy to instruct beginners at an easy pace at any time.
